- the bengal school of Art arose in the early 20th century as a nationalist movement. led by abanindranath tagore, a new style was created to express Indians spirituality and culture.at the core of this movement was the wash technique .by layering thin washes of water colour. abanindranath achieved tones,softness and depth unlike oil painting. over time, wash painting declined. yet it’s importance endures.
