alipore sarbojanin
sawng kalpo
for the 79th year of alipore sarbojanin durga puja, a celebration of bengal’s rich folk heritage through the theme ‘sawng-kalpo’ (the imagined sawng), honoring sawng performers—those who, through their Art, embody both mortals and the divine. rooted in folk theatre traditions like alkap and sawng, these performers blur distinctions of gender, religion, caste, and social status, carrying forward bengal’s legacy of humour, devotion, and unity with the gods. this year, a troupe of sawng and alkap artists from malda have performed daily at our pandal, uniting their timeless melodies with durga’s arrival as a tribute to the vibrant soul of bengal.
