- the bengali calendar is filled with festivals. and the banana tree is a constant presence in each one of them. this plant is indispensible in any joyous ritual its humble ubiquitous presence all through rural bengal belies its importance in the life of the bengali community. ancient wisdom ascribes divine power and medicinal value to this tree. this is a plant we use in our daily lives in its entirety. apart from its delicious fruit, its flowers and its stem are eaten. its leaves and bark serve as utensils. fibre extracted from this tree can be used in the textiles and handicrafts industries. it purifies water and fertilises soil.
